Catena del Lagorai

This chain is made up of a number of rocky groups which extend  over an area of more than 900 Km sq. The mountainous groups which are part of the Lagorai are, from south-east: the Fravort- Sette Selle, the  Ruioch-Croce- Bolena, the Manghen- Stellune-Sadole, the Cauriol-Cece-Colbricon,  Tognola-Scanaiol.  The  Rava-Cima d'Asta Group is divided into the central Zimon-nodo , Tolvà-Cima Orena, Cime di Rava.
These mountains are crossed by more than 100 numbered paths, for a total length of 688 km. The  paths start with number “3”.

The Lagorai Group border is marked, in the north, by the Val di Fiemme and Travignolo, in the east by the Val Cismon, the Valsugana in the south and by the Val di Cembra and the plateau of Pinè in the west-south-west.
This group is rich in water and hence covered  by a large number of lakes, of different sizes, from which flow a vast number of torrents that in turn feed the river Adige ( Fersina torrent), the river Avisio ( the Travignolo, the Valmaggiore, the Lagorai, the Val Moena and the Cadino torrents), the river Brenta ( the Ceggio, the Larganza, the Maso Chieppena and the Grigno torrents). The Vanoi and Senaiga torrents flow into the river Cismon.
The largest lake in this area is Lake Calaita. The most well known are probably the lakes of Colbricon, but there are a host of wonderful lakes worth visiting, such as lake Stellune, Lake Lagorai, Lake Cima d’Asta, Lake Buse, Lake Moregna, Lake Erdemole, to mention a few!
From a geo- morphological point of view,  the Lagorai is characterized by effusive volcanic rocks. In the southern and western zones the rock is metamorphic and is best known as “Porphyry of the Lagorai”. This rock goes as deep as 2000 m and more and is the result of repeated  volcanic eruptions in the Permian period ( 250-280 million years ago) . It is part of the Porphyritic Shelf of the Alto Adige Valley,  that is the basement of the eastern Dolomites.

The main peaks in the Lagorai are: Monte Croce m. 2490, Monte Gronlait, m.2383,monte Hoabonti, m.2334, Cima Sette Selle, m.2396, Cima delle Buse, m.2574, Cima delle Stellune, m.2605; cima di Lagorai,m.2530; Castel di Bombasel, m2535, Cima Lastè della Sute m2616, Cimon di Cadinello, m.2438, Monte Cauriol, m.2494, Colrotondo, m.2530, Cima di Valmaggiore, Cima di Cece, m.2754.
The Cima d'Asta Group, even though it’s included in the Lagorai Chain, stands out  from the rest because it’s isolated , it ‘s higher and its geological conformation is different as it’s formed from granitic rock.
The Val Sorgazza ( in the south) is the main access valley to this group. It’s natural borders are marked by the Tesino Passo Brocon road in the south-east, by the Val Campelle in the west and by the Val Cia in the north.
In addition to the central nucleus, the Cima d’Asta Group has two ramifications: the Rava sub group in the south-west and the Cima di Tolvà in the south-east. These are located to the east of the Valli Regana and Tolvà.
The highest peaks in the group are: Cima Asta, 2847m, Cima de Diavoli, 2808m , and they can all be reached from the Brentari refuge. In the Rava sub group Monte Cengello, Cima Orsera and the Cimon di Rava all stand out above the rest. The highest peaks in the Tolvà group are: Monte Conte Moro, Col della Croce and Monte Tolvà.

Most of the paths that criss-cross these mountains were the scene of many gruesome and painful battle fields: a number of forts and military communication trenches can still be seen here and give testimony to the history of these places. In the Val dei Mocheni ( path which leads to lake Erdemolo) there’s an interesting mining museum to visit, (Grua va Hardoembl) which operated up to the mid nineteenth century.
