The Marmolada dolomitic group takes its name from the “Queen of the Dolomites” and is located in the provinces of Trento and Belluno, in the centre of the dolomitic range.

The highest peak is Punta Penia with its 3343 m. The mountain consists of a ridge running west to east. Towards the south it breaks suddenly into sheer cliffs, forming a rock face 4 km long and 830 m high. On the north side there’s a comparatively flat glacier, the largest in Italy. Only the most experienced climbers can face the ascent of the rock wall: max. difficulty.

The Cima Ombretta 3010 m., Sasso Vernale and Sas de Val Freda close the Val Contrin in the south-east. The Padon Chain with the Bec da mesdi extends to the north and brushes against Lake Fedaia as it does so. The Monzoni-Vallaccia sub group and Costabella –Cima dell’Uomo extend in an east-west direction marking the border, in the south, of the Valle di San Nicolò, ( reachable from Pozza di Fassa) , separating it from the the more southern Val di San Pellegrino, crossed over by the A road of the homonymous pass .

The ridge is composed of several summits and, from the east, Punta di Valacia, m.2637, Malinverno, Punta Alochet, Piccol and Gran Laste, Cima de Costabella, Punta de Le Valate, m.2837, Cima dell'Uomo, m.3010 stand out among the others.

Between the Val Contrin and the Val San Nicolò the summits of the Collac Buffaure are located marking the borders of the Val Giumela.

In the Belluno territory, towards the north, the Cime dell’Auta rise above Falcade. In the south theBocche Chain extends parallel to the Monzoni Vallaccia and marks the border of the Val di San Pellegrino to the north and the Valle di Travignolo to the south.The highest summits in this group are : Cima Bocche, m.2745, Cima Laste , Cima Juribrutto, Monte Pradazzo.

The nearest access points to Marmolada are Canazei and the Fedaia Pass, Falcade and the cabin lift that leads from Rocca Pietore. The nearest access point to the Monzoni Group is the San Pellegrino Pass. Pozza di Fassa is an ideal access point for the Valle di San Nicolò.
