IMMERSI NELLA NATURA DEL TRENTINO

Ortles Cevedale e Catena delle Maddalene

This mountain complex belongs to the Ortles-Cevedale Group and is located in the autonomous province of Trento, south-east of the Cevedale Pass. It extends from Pizzo Tresero to Punta S.,Matteo up to the Vioz and Mount Cevedale, then eastwards to the Cime Venezia and Sternai. Nearly all of its territory is in the 950 sq.km which make up the Stelvio National Park, (the largest in Italy). Its geographical borders are: in the north, the Valò del Forno in the province of Sondrio, the Val di Trafoi , Solda and the alta Val Venosta in the province of Bolzano; in the east, the Val di Pejo seperates it from the Vegai Tremenesca Group and the Val di Rabbi from the Maddalene; in the south the border is marked by the alta Val di Sole up to the Tonale Pass ; westwards the borders are defined by the Valli delle Messi and the Valle del Gavia.
Mount Cevedale is the highest mountain in the Trentino portion ( 3769m) and it marks the border.

The most interesting access routes from the Trentino are the Val di Pejo and the Val dei Rabbi. Numerous small lakes can be found high up in the mountains: the Sternai lakes, the Corvo lakes in Val Rabbi, the Marmotte lakes, the Lungolago and lake Careser in Val di Pejo. The main river is the Noce which rises from the Corno dei Tre Signori and is fed by the Noce Bianco torrent, the Rabbies torrent, the Pescara torrent and the Novella stream which all come from the orographic left.
The main refuges in the Trentino portion are the Rifugio Mantova al Vioz, the Rifugio Larcher in the Val di Pejo, the rifugi Dorigoni and LagoCorvo that can be reached from the Val di Rabbi.
Remember : all high altitude crossings need preparation, experience and equipment ( ice axe, crampons and ropes).

The Maddalene Chain, on the other hand, does not have extreme elevations or audacious forms. It’s full of lush  valleys with vast green meadows. There are no refuges here, so excursions must be completed in a day. The Aldo Bonacossa path crosses the Palade Pass at Penasa, a hamlet of Rabbi ( 23 hour walk). There is, however, the possibilty of staying overnight in one of the bivouacs or mountain farms which are always open. The northern part of the Group is delimited by the Val dell’Ultimo and by the Rabbi Pass, to the east by the Palade Pass, to the south by the Val di Sole and to the south-east by the Val di Non. Many of its peaks exceed 2500 m : Cima Lainert, Castel Pagan, Cima delle Mandrie, Cima Tuatti, 2701m. Cima Trenta, Monte Mattonara, Monte Pin, Cime Binasia, Cime Siromba, Cima degli Olmi, Cima Lavazè, Monte Sommo, La Vecia and Mount Lucio with its homonymous lake.
The complex of mountains housed between the Valli di Rabbi and the Val di Pejo is most commonly known as the Vegaia Tremenesca Group ( the names of the main peaks) . There are many beautiful lakes to be seen and admired here and, amongst the many,  Lake Rotondo deserves a special mention.
